چکیده

Field studies have demonstrated that it is possible to evaluate the state of many shipboard systems by analyzing the power drawn by electromechanical actuators (Cox et al. 2006; Cox et al. 2007; DeNucci et al. 2005; Mitchell et al. 2006; Ramsey et al. 2005). One device that can perform such an analysis is the non-intrusive load monitor (NILM). This paper focuses on specific field studies conducted aboard two US Coast Guard Medium Endurance Cutters and at the U.S. Navy’s DDG-51 Land-Based Engineering Site (LBES). The field tests demonstrate that the NILM, which relies only on electrical measurements, can automatically detect many existing and impeding failures. Many of these faults can be detected simply by examining the operating schedules of the appropriate electrical loads.

Improving Shipboard Applications of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring

The Non-Intrusive Load Monitor (NILM) measures equipment performance by measuring and analyzing the source power to the equipment at a single point in the electrical system. Previous studies have proven the usefulness of the NILM system in characterizing the state of mechanical systems onboard U.S. Coast Guard vessels and at the U.S. Navy’s Land Based Engineering Site (LBES) in Philadelphia, Pe...

Shipboard Automatic Watchstander

Crew sizes in the Navy and Coast Guard continue to decrease. Optimally or minimally manned crews complete ever more complex and varied mission sets. Accordingly, crews rely on sensors and automatic operation to perform a host of duties formerly completed manually. The Non-Intrusive Load Monitor (NILM) provides a low cost, low-maintenance, rugged, easily installed tool for machinery monitoring f...

Non-Intrusive Monitoring for Condition-Based Maintenance

The Navy’s Integrated Condition Assessment System (ICAS) is continuously evolving to meet the needs of today’s fleet as well as the requirements of future ship designs. This paper describes a technology known as the non-intrusive load monitor that could support the evolution of ICAS and other condition-based maintenance (CBM) systems. The non-intrusive load monitor (NILM) [8, 9, 10] can be used...
